Mercado Libre Invests $4.6 Billion to Expand Logistics Footprint in Mexico

Mercado Libre has announced plans to build a new distribution centre in the Areya Escobedo Industrial Park in Escobedo, Nuevo León, Mexico. The first building will cover approximately 70,000 square metres, scheduled to officially open in September 2026. It is expected to create more than 2,000 jobs and will be the first tenant to settle in the industrial park. Once the full development of the park is complete, an additional 8,000 to 10,000 jobs are projected to be created. This project forms a key part of Mercado Libre’s record-breaking \$4.6 billion investment in Mexico for 2026, representing a 35% increase from its 2025 investment amount. The funding will also go toward building e-commerce logistics infrastructure, developing platform technologies, and upgrading and expanding Mercado Pago, its fintech arm. The overall investment aims to further boost the company’s fulfilment capacity across North America and enhance the local digital ecosystem. Cross-border sellers operating in the Mexican market should pay close attention to the improved logistics speed in northern Mexico and cross-border US-Mexico corridors brought by the expanded coverage of the new distribution centre, and optimise their inventory stocking and delivery strategies accordingly based on business needs.
